The History of Pride
Pride Month commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City.
Research shows us that, although the uprising was spontaneous, it was related to a long history of mistreatment of LGBTQ+ people in New York, and around the world.
A key part of this movement was to encourage conversations about the lives and perceptions of LGBTQ+ people, and to fight for radical change in the way that LGBTQ+ people were treated by society.
In the UK, the Pride movement saw the growth and establishment of grassroots organisations that worked to stop the oppression of LGBTQ+ people.
The first Pride event was organised in New York City on the 28th of June 1970 and soon Pride parades were established all over the world.
What has the Pride Movement achieved?
Since the Stonewall Riots, LGBTQ+ people have fought globally for their rights and liberties. Following the first Pride, there was a surge in countries which legalised homosexuality. Moreover, the LGBTQ+ community now have personal and political rights (for example, equal partnership) in countries around the world and the Pride movement continues to fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the twenty-first century.
Why is Pride important?
Despite many positive legal and societal changes in support of the LGBTQ+ community, there is still much work to do to ensure universal support and safety
In 2018, Stonewall found;
-
1/5 LGBTQ+ people experienced a hate crime because of their identity
-
Nearly half of LGBTQ+ pupils still experience homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools.
-
More than a 1/3 of UK employees don’t believe it’s appropriate for their LGBTQ+ colleagues to be out in the workplace
This has to change.
